Veikkausliiga 2025 Season Start: Wonderkid Tiitinen Sealed the Win for Ilves, Last-Minute Drama in Vaasa

Veikkausliiga 2025 season kicked off on Saturday, April 5, with a full round of matches. The most anticipated match of the round was the clash between Ilves and HJK in Tampere, played at the nearly sold-out Tammela Stadium.

 

Ilves - HJK (3-2)

Ilves pulled off a dramatic 3–2 comeback win against HJK in the opening round of the 2025 Veikkausliiga season. HJK took an early 2–0 lead with two goals from Santeri Hostikka within the first 15 minutes. Ilves responded with a stunning goal from Lauri Ala-Myllymäki before halftime.

The game turned in the second half when young Ilves talent Tiitinen entered in the 67th minute. He quickly made an impact by scoring the equalizer (via a deflection) and later netted the winning goal with a brilliant strike into the top corner in the 77th minute. The match, played at a nearly sold-out Tammela Stadium, ended in celebration for Ilves as they secured their first win of the season.

 

VPS - AC Oulu (4-3)

VPS (Palloseura) kicked off their 2025 Veikkausliiga season with a thrilling 4–3 home win over AC Oulu. Despite dominating early play, VPS trailed 0–2 at halftime after two goals from Niklas Jokelainen. Oulu went down to 10 men before the break, which shifted the momentum.

In the second half, VPS mounted a comeback. Mads Borchers scored from the penalty spot, then assisted Maissa Fall’s equalizer. Borchers added a second goal shortly after to make it 3–2. Oulu equalized in the 90th minute, but Borchers completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to secure the win.

VPS head coach Jussi Nuorela praised the team’s mental strength and called the match a showcase of everything football can offer.
